            <title>NanoDynamics Successfully Completes Phase I and Phase IB STTR Grant for Development of NanoPly™ ...</title>

            <description>BUFFALO, N.Y., Jun. 27, 2008 – NanoDynamics Inc. announced the completion of its six-month, $50,000 Phase IB STTR grant extension from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the research and development of a novel consolidation method for nanostructured metals.  The grant continued funding for NanoDynamics’ joint efforts with Purdue University and Columbus, Ohio’s Edison Welding Institute (EWI) to refine the group’s ultrasonic metal welding capabilities of nanostructured materials.  Produced via large strain extrusion machining (LSEM), these bulk materials consist of hybrid metal strips known as NanoPly™.

“With a demand for high-strength, lightweight metal materials across a wide scope of industries – from automotive, to aerospace, to the military –  the NSF grants allowed us to further explore the possibilities offered by LSEM metals,” said Douglas DuFaux, director of technology management at NanoDynamics.  

Work completed under the Phase IB program included refining a process that can create strip lengths of the NanoPly “foil” composed of varying types of metals.  The process is expected to accommodate virtually any type of metal or alloy, with numerous possibilities for material combinations.

“We were able to examine and refine the ways in which ultrasonic welding allows for metal ‘layering’ of nanocrystaline materials, thus enabling us to engineer new materials of similar or dissimilar metals,” said Maurice Belisle, project manager for the NanoPly technology at NanoDynamics.  “For example, we can combine the lightweight benefits of aluminum or the corrosion-resistance of other metals with the strength and cost-efficiency of steel.  We’ve been able to demonstrate promising capabilities with 50-500 nm grain materials, with strength and hardness significantly greater than that of the parent material.”

The process is well-suited for production, from both a cost and scale-up perspective.  At present, the project has generated continuous runs of one-inch wide nanostructured foil material approaching 250 feet in length at production costs that similarly compare to other production approaches.  

Work, which began in January of 2007 under the Phase I NSF grant, is expected to advance into commercialization.

As an economics graduate from the Bocconi University in Milan, Resca worked for the Chase Manhattan Bank.  In 1974 he was appointed director of Saifi Finanziaria (Fiat Group), and from 1976 to 1990 he was managing partner of Egon Zehnder Intl.  During this period he was also appointed director of Lancôme Italia and of companies belonging to the Rizzoli-Corriere della Sera Group and Versace Group. He then held roles as chairman and CEO, master franchisee, and J.V. partner and president of McDonald's Development Italia, Inc.  from 1995-2007. BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 8, 2008 – NanoDynamics, Inc. announced today its delivery of a 50-watt solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), powered by desulfurized synthetic JP-8 fuel, to the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center’s (CERDEC) U.S. Army Communications Electronics Command.  The unit is part of an ongoing, multi-phase program started in April of 2005 to develop advanced SOFC technology compatible with a variety of common hydrocarbon fuels for the Army’s mid-range power requirements.

“Our work to date has included the development of a unique cell-and-stack architecture, water-neutral partial oxidation JP-8 reformer, and microprocessor-controlled system design,” said Dr. Caine Finnerty, V.P. of fuel cells for NanoDynamics.  “The current unit also operates entirely on liquid fuel, and does not require an additional inert gas such as nitrogen for start up or shutdown.”   

The approximately $2.0 million program will continue this year with work toward a 250-watt portable technology demonstrator, also fueled by desulfurized JP-8.

“The next unit will incorporate advanced third-generation cells, resulting in a five-fold power increase with only an approximate 30-percent increase in unit size,” Finnerty said.   The 250-watt demonstrator unit is slated for delivery by the end of 2008.

The company’s state-of-the-art rotating tube reactor (RTR) continuous process module provides an environment for the rapid reduction of solvent levels within a chemical processing stream, without degrading valuable heat or shear-sensitive products.   A controllable thin film is generated inside the rotating tube, creating high surface areas for heat and mass transfer processes.  The combined internal vacuum conditions and external addition of heat to the rotating tube result in significantly high solvent removal rates.

Process intensification revisits the fundamentals of fluid dynamics and is created when mixing occurs on a nano or micro scale, enhanced by high shear conditions using thin films. Unlike normal batch chemical processes, scale-up issues are minimized as every volume element experiences precise, identical process conditions and residence times. 

“When compared to traditional chemical manufacturing processes, NDFusion’s process intensification technology offers greater process flexibility, offering scalability in throughput and reaction times, and a number of reactor configuration options,” Dr. Rae said.  “It also provides an improved method for bench-through-plant scale-up as it eliminates the typical challenges of heat transfer and other surface phenomena, as well as those associated with mixing and thermal transfer dynamics.”

The regional competition will be held Jan.  26, 2008 at Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Kenmore, N.Y.   
            
Future City, in its 16th year, asks middle school students to create a computer and tabletop model design of a “city of the future,” including elements that address current global infrastructure challenges.  Working in teams with a teacher and volunteer engineer mentor, they also develop an abstract and essay on using engineering to solve an important social need.  This year's theme asks students to describe how nanotechnology will monitor their city’s structures and systems to maintain a healthy infrastructure.  Students then present and defend their designs before volunteer engineer judges from the community at regional competitions across the U.S.  A record number of more than 30,000 students from 1,111 schools in 40 regions will participate this year. 

 “Through this competition, students see engineering as a direct influence on their lives, and how math and science are relevant to their world,” said Carol Rieg, Future City national director.  “We reach these children just when they start to consider where they want to go in their lives.”

Based in Pittsburgh, ND Life Sciences develops nanomaterials and nano-enabled technologies specifically for applications in biotechnology and medicine.  The contract, which took effect this September, will support NanoDynamics’ joint efforts with the University of Pittsburgh to address the critical issue of infection associated with ventricular assist devices (VADs), and specifically the drivelines of these devices.

The University of Pittsburgh and ND Life Sciences will use this SBIR funding to speed the development of nanotechnology-based infection-resistant driveline coatings.  This work will also be directly applicable to other widely used medical device implants such as shunts and catheters.

“With cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in the U.S., it has been estimated that between 15,000 and 50,000 patients, including children, could benefit annually from mechanical circulatory support devices including total artificial heart implants and VADs,” said Dr. Harvey Borovetz, professor and chair, department of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh.  “To achieve improved clinical outcomes with these devices, a viable and proven antimicrobial solution is needed for entry point components such as drivelines, as entry point areas are often a locus for patient infection.”   

“The majority of intracorporeal device infections are caused by biofilm-forming bacteria and fungi, which severely limits the antibiotic arsenal available to treat them,” said Dr. Alan Russell, director of McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine and university professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.  “With limited success in the reduction of device-associated infections, the most often-used therapy to treat an infection is outright removal of the device.”

Work funded by the SBIR contract will investigate the ability of coatings with anti-infective nanosilver to increase biocompatibility and inhibit bacteria adhesion on the surfaces of indwelling medical devices.  

 “The antimicrobial activity of silver in its ionic form has been well-known for centuries,” explained Dr. Alan Rae, vice president of NanoDynamics’ strategic business unit, ND Innovations.  “In fact, of all metal ions, silver exhibits the highest toxicity for microorganisms without being a threat to healthy mammalian cells.  In addition, nano-scale silver has uniform distribution capabilities along with a large surface area to ensure the release of effective concentrations of silver to combat bacteria.”  

The work funded by this initial Phase I contract is expected to progress from bench testing to eventual in vivo trials.

            <description>BUFFALO, N.Y., November 21, 2007 – NanoDynamics Energy Inc. recently presented preliminary test data demonstrating efficiencies of its G4 cell in excess of 60 percent between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius, while also illustrating 800 hours of operation time with zero degradation. Efficiencies were calculated using lower heating value of fuel into the cell versus power out.

“With short-term data showing efficiencies greater than 60 percent, we are confident that long-term data will illustrate efficiencies in the high 50 percent range,” said Dr. Caine Finnerty, V.P. of fuel cells at ND Energy. “Our G4 cell technology has a 60 percent higher volumetric power density and decreases unit power mass (kg/kW) by more than 60 percent, translating into a smaller, lighter-weight unit with overall reduced production costs.”

According to Finnerty, this is a result of ND Energy’s recent focus on manufacturing process optimization to remove approximately 65 percent of the material from its current G1 cell. In addition, the G4 cell technology has shown rapid temperature ramp-up capabilities of as fast as 550 degrees Celsius per minute.

            <description>BUFFALO, N.Y., October 2, 2007 – NanoDynamics subsidiary MetaMateria Partners announced today its receipt of a $350,000 grant through the Ohio Department of Development’s Third Frontier Project Ohio Research Commercialization Grant Program (ORCGP). The grant, which took effect this June, will fund efforts to expand its ceramic parts fabrication business for the production of complex short- and medium-run porous and solid ceramic components. It will specifically be used to identify customers and partners for medical, environmental, energy, abrasive/hard ceramics, advanced ceramics and other industry applications.

“This grant affords us an important opportunity to further explore commercial uses for this unique fabrication technology, beyond our initial deployment in fuel cell components,” said MetaMateria Partners president Dr. J. Richard Schorr. “To this end, we are honored to be recognized by the Ohio Department of Development’s Third Frontier Commission as a company with significant innovations pegged for sustainable economic success.”

MetaMateria’s proprietary process for component production from micron and submicron powders is water-based and contains low amounts of organics (typically less than 3 percent). This environmentally friendly process provides several additional advantages over dry powder processing or wax-based injection molding, specifically by using colloidal processes to obtain a more uniform microstructure in the fabricated component. This leads to improved control over component shrinkage, better mechanical properties, and higher manufacturing yields.

“To date, we have been successful in fabricating both simple and complex parts with up to 80-percent unfired density using this process,” said Schorr.

This direct forming technique involves the liquid injection of a suspension into a die, followed by rapid solidification (in minutes) and subsequent removal of the part from the mold. The part is then fully dried, and can be machined before firing to obtain a desired density or porosity.

The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have not yet been determined.

NanoDynamics intends to use a portion of the net proceeds from the offering for capital equipment and expansion of its manufacturing capabilities, research and development, and sales and marketing activities.  The company will use the remaining net proceeds for general corporate purposes.

            <description>BUFFALO, N.Y., April 27, 2007 – NanoDynamics, Inc., a diversified nanotechnology and manufacturing company, today announced the launch of TechBank™.  This forum offers information on a selection of the company’s intellectual property (IP) technologies that are available for sale, licensing, partnering or joint development.

•	Intermediate – These technologies have been secured through published or applied patents, and prototypes have been demonstrated.  A potential partner has the opportunity to develop a manufacturing process best suited to a particular market/application.
•	Nascent – These technologies have an IP disclosure and a prototype has been developed, but patents have not yet been filed.  A potential partner has the opportunity to tailor the patent and the product to cover a particular market/application.
•	Theoretical – These technologies have an IP disclosure or patent, but prototypes do not yet exist.

Potsdam, New York - The St. Lawrence Valley of New York State may soon be as synonymous with nanotechnology and bio fuels as Silicon Valley is with computer chips.    NanoDynamics, Inc., a diversified nanotechnology and manufacturing company headquartered in Buffalo, NY, today announced the opening of its newest subsidiary, ND Fusion, in Potsdam. The new business focuses on commercializing process intensification technologies for applications across a broad range of industries from nanoparticle synthesis to biofuel production to pharmaceutical intermediates, catalysts and more.

Process intensification was developed in the1970's as a means to reduce production plant size and capital costs in the oil industry but has more recently evolved into a pathway to &quot;Green Chemistry,&quot; the design of chemical processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous su
